Dan and I have been FB friends since I first was contacted by him a few months back, when he asked me to check out the first issue of Kite Family. Because the series is a Real Life genre book, the issues and situations in it, felt like it was speaking to me personally as an adult male. I felt at one with the character, even though there isn't much revelation about why Donnie is back from where ever he was. The story allowed me to put myself in Donnie's place and think about the shit, for lack of a better adjective, that I had/have been going through after my own split and returning to my parents home to recoup for a while before I decided it was time to stand up.

Welcome one and all to another walk down odd-ball lane!

What's on the agenda for today you ask? Well its simple really - today we're going to discuss a rare gem that I had the excellent fortune to come across earlier this year which I really would like to share simply because the book deserves to be read by as many as are willing.

Our topic for today is Image Comics' "The Bulletproof Coffin" by legendary (for some anyway) British writer David Hine along with Shaky Kane on art duty. Hine, known mostly for his work on Spawn, has actually worked on an amazing cross section of genres and character's such as Spiderman, Transformers, X-Men (during Civil War), Silent War and 2000AD (Tharg's Future Shocks) among others.
His co-hort in this descent into madness is Shaky Kane, a British "psychedelic artist" who has worked on many titles for 2000AD among other comic projects and has a fairly unique style of art that translates superbly to this most surreal project.

So with introductions out of the way, on to the comic!

With Steve Rogers proudly packing what appears to be a colonial marines pulse rifle on the front cover, you know you're gonna be in for an exciting ride in volume 2 of Marvel's comic following the covert Avengers world police style strike team. Things certainly do heat up in these issues as Steve's team travel to Hong Kong and China in their mission to uncover more about the secret but powerful organisation known as the Shadow Council, led by the Enigmatic Thorndrake and Nick Fury's doppelganger, Max Fury. Time for some people to get kicked in the mouth!

Mon... Err.. Tuesday Manga Madness: The Bare Neccesities III

Lets talk about Akira.

It was once upon a time (quite a while ago) when I was going through the inexhaustible information that is the internet, that I came across a particular poster. It was not something out of this world. Looked like a standard Sci-fi poster to me. But something about it caught my eye. Perhaps it was the slick looking bike that instantly attracted my vision, or perhaps it was the mysterious Capsule logo on the back of the protagonists jacket. Or maybe was it the cracked road underneath hinting possibly at an apocalypse.

Either way I did what any sensible anime fan would do upon encountering such a poster - devote my meager resources to hunting down and watching the movie. Needless to say, my mind was blown.

The Inhabitants by the Sheehan Bros.

The Inhabitants, a graphic novel in four parts by the Sheehan Bros - Kelly on script and Darren on art - is an overwhelming escape into a nightmarish dream-scape of strange creatures and wondrous characters. The story opens with us being introduced to a young man named Tom who happens to suddenly gain the ability to fly, or float, depending on what your thoughts are about whether Tom is in a dream or has walked into another world - much like Dorothy or Alice. It is important that you keep in mind these two characters of lore as the story is very visual, much like Oz, and Wonderland.
I bought the four issues as a set because I wanted to make sure I had the entire collection to read in one sitting as I am of the mind that its better to have the whole story to read rather than an issue at a time, but we all know that sometimes that is not possible. But I was glad that the Sheehan's had the singles and sets for sale. The cost for this amazing work of escapism and graphic story-telling was NZ$18.00 for all four.
