Deadpool #60
(Marvel)
Story : Daniel Way
Art : Salva Espin
(Reviewed by Anant Sagar)
Quick recap for those of you not up to
date..
Deadpool, the merc with a mouth (and a
healing factor as awesome as the legendary Wolverine), has lost his
healing factor. He can’t super heal anymore.
Now the knowledge has reached the
Deadpool hating baddie, Black Box, who's sent a bunch of villains who
have “problems” with Wade after him - namely Black Swan (former
awesome merc) and arch nemesis (of sorts) Black Tom Cassidy.
And now, onward!
When Wade was in school he liked to put
a lit matchstick near his backside. Cut to the present fight, he puts
a fuel pipe between his legs and a lighter near his a$$ and screams
“I’m the Human Flamethrower.” Thus with the power of a
flaming derriere, Wade defeats Black Tom and Black Box, and burns
himself in the process.
A little spoiler now. Turns out Black
Swan is alive, and he’s helping Deadpool wipe the minds of the
other Black-(insert names here) villains with the knowledge that Wade
has no healing factor.
Black Swan and Deadpool decide to team
up. And DP threatens Swan one last time.
All in all a good conclusion (I think
it’s a conclusion) to the Black-villains saga. But as a standalone
issue, the high point was definitely the flaming buttocks.

Fairest #7
(Vertigo)
Story : Matthew Sturges
Art : Shawn McManus
(Reviewed by Anubhav Dasgupta)
The stories in Fairest are far removed
from the goings-on in its parent title – Fables –
and it’s quite refreshing because, well, Bill Willingham has
created a world that’s far more interesting than the characters he
wants to spin tales around. You can say that the world of Fables
itself is the comic’s greatest strength.
Fairest takes place in a different part
of the same world, and this issue takes place in a different time.
Issue #7 is a classic Noir tale revolving around the Beast (from
Beauty and the Beast) tracking down a Succubus-like monster called
the Lamia. On the same quest is Saint-George (yes, THAT Saint George,
the one who killed THAT dragon) but they don’t quite see
eye-to-eye.
George-y, you see, wants this Lamia
dead, but the Beast wants to take her in alive for some reason. The
great mystery of the comic is “Why?” Why would the Beast want a
creature as deadly, unforgiving and disgusting as the Lamia to live?
It’s not self righteousness that keeps him from doing so, but
something else that I’d rather not spoil. All I’ll say is that
certain reveals in this issue could impact the lives of Fable-towners
immensely.
The art is great. It reminds me of Tim
Sale at his prime. The colours make the comic-book look like a
sepia-toned Noir film from the ‘40s.
The story is brilliant. It takes one of
the oldest conventions of Noir and twists it in a way that’ll shock
and surprise even longtime Fable readers. The twist is nothing short
of genius.
This comic is mandatory reading for
fans of Fable, and non-fans will enjoy this comic immensely. Whoever
you are, wherever you are, do pick this comic up.

Green Lantern v5 #0 (DC)
Story : Geoff Johns
Art : Doug Mahnke (pencils) +
Christian Alamy, Keith Champagne and Mark Irwin (inks)
(Reviewed by Anant Sagar)
So far, space sector-2814 has been host
to many great Lanterns.
Abin Sur, the great Hal Jordon, the
ever-sparkling personality of Guy Gardner, USMC sniper/Architect John
Stewart, the imaginative Kyle Rayner and several others.
Now we have a new one.
Simon Baz of Earth has been chosen
worthy.
Now who is Simon Baz? That is what this
issue is all about. Simon is a young Lebanese-American, with a tattoo
on his forearm that stands for courage (it glows when he gets the
ring). He is a criminal, steals cars and now due to a bomb being in
one of the cars he stole, the govt thinks he’s also a terrorist.
Quite a rap sheet for a superhero to be. He gets the ring, but there
seems to be an error in it as it attaches itself onto his finger.
A lantern who as per the teasers and
cover, wears a full mask and carries a gun. Why does he carry a gun?
Why has the ring chosen this man, a criminal? What lies in store for
one of my favourite teams in the DC universe (the Green lantern
corps)?
I must know, I MUST KNOW.
So I guess that means the issue is
effective. I give it a 8, because it makes me want more knowledge.
