Black Orchid by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean

Writer: Neil Gaiman
Artist: Dave McKean
Collects: Black Orchid issues 1-3
Published by Vertigo

Beauty, like vanity is fleeting. That is, in a nutshell, the message of this story. It isn’t a story as much as it’s the feel of a story. It was something fresh and new at the time it was released, and I daresay, almost twenty five years later, it still holds up perfectly well – if you see it for what it is. And what was it? Black Orchid was a little known character from DC’s stable of supernatural heroes whom I couldn’t be bothered to look up, not because I had doubts regarding the quality of the classic material (and in these days of new 52s and AvXs, I find myself visiting a lot of classic material), it was just so that I always had things to read that I knew to be reliably…good. Also, this was Neil Gaiman’s first outing across the waters, just as it was Dave McKean’s.

Just when she is at the cusp of a revelation regarding underworld proceedings in an ongoing investigation, Black Orchid is discovered. So as not to fall victim to the familiar trope of villains boasting their schemes giving the ‘hero’ time to ‘loosen their bonds’ or somesuch, the head goon immediately shoots her in the head. Black Orchid survives, just to face a fire which eventually kills her. Or it would have, had she been really alive….because, to purists, there is a notable difference between the words grown, bred, and alive. If there is, I don’t know what it is.

Week In Review : Deadpool #60 + Fairest #07 + Green Lantern v5 #0

More new comics!! No blather, just enjoy!- Eager Editor

Deadpool #60 (Marvel)
Story : Daniel Way
Art : Salva Espin
(Reviewed by Anant Sagar)
Quick recap for those of you not up to date..
Deadpool, the merc with a mouth (and a healing factor as awesome as the legendary Wolverine), has lost his healing factor. He can’t super heal anymore.
Now the knowledge has reached the Deadpool hating baddie, Black Box, who's sent a bunch of villains who have “problems” with Wade after him - namely Black Swan (former awesome merc) and arch nemesis (of sorts) Black Tom Cassidy.
And now, onward!
When Wade was in school he liked to put a lit matchstick near his backside. Cut to the present fight, he puts a fuel pipe between his legs and a lighter near his a$$ and screams “I’m the Human Flamethrower.” Thus with the power of a flaming derriere, Wade defeats Black Tom and Black Box, and burns himself in the process.

Week In Review : American Vampire #29 + Justice League Dark #11 + The Goon #40

American Vampire #29 (Vertigo)
Story : Scott Snyder
Art : Rafael Albuquerque
(Reviewed by Anirudh Singh)
Skinner Sweet is back. The monster from the old wild west returns to doing what he does best. Hunting down the old breed of vampires. And this time he is doing it for Uncle Sam. Partnering up with his old crush/protege Pearl Jones. The two of them are set loose in Hollywood to undertake their own witchhunt. While the government tries to sniff out the communists, the two of them are here to bring to light any incidents of Vampires being hidden among the rich, affluent movie magnates.
Skinner Sweet and Pearl Jones always have such wonderful chemistry together that its a wonder most issues in the series arent centred about them. Skinner's character is pretty much what drew a lot of people to this series, including me. He acts as a perfect foil to the good hearted Pearl. Add to this the fact that we know the European breed of Bloodsuckers indeed have something up their sleeve (thanks to Lord of Nightmares) and this story becomes doubly interesting.

WEEK IN REVIEW : American Vampire-Lord of Nightmares #1 + Avengers #27 + AvX Versus #3 + Deadpool #56 + Knight Errant - Escape #1

Welcome back to more new-release reviews! Today is dominated by Marvel titles because this week there were a bunch of new AvX related tie-ins that we knew folks would want to read.
But despair not if you have little interest in the Marvel Summer Event, there are a couple of less fighty-spandex titles on the list as well, starting with this Vertigo wonder that kicks the list off!

American Vampire: Lord of Nightmares #1 (Vertigo)
Story : Scott Snyder
Art : Dustin Nguyen
(Reviewed by Anirudh Singh)
Another Felicia Book story, and this one steeped heavily in Vassals of Morning Star lore. Needless to say you should not be picking this book up unless you are an American Vampire fan. And in case you are an American Vampire fan, then congratulations... you just found another American Vampire comic book. An awesome continuation of an awesome series. With only slightly less awesome characters.
What? I'm a Skinner Sweet fan okay. And Felicia just never did it for me.
But that doesn't mean she didn't do it for anyone. And even though I begrudge her slow yet inevitable takeover of the limelight in the American Vampire saga, I do respect her prowess and recognize her necessity. She is the perfect heroine for this saga. And it seems that the vassals of the Morning Star have let loose the perfect villain for the saga as well.

Week In Review : Earth 2 #2 + Extermination #1 + Sweet Tooth #34 + Trio #2

Here you go folks, the wrap up on our picks from this weeks new releases!
Today we have a wickedly amazing mixed bag of comics - every single one unquestionably awesome and entertaining. This is maybe the highest scoring total for new releases in one post I'd wager!
Enjoy!

Earth 2 #2 (DC)
Story : James Robinson
Art : Nicola Scott (pencils), Trevor Scott (inks) & Alex Sinclair/Pete Pantazis (colours)
(Reviewed by Anant Sagar)
Ladies, gentlemen and other species. Welcome back to Earth 2. And boy what a welcome it is!
It’s time for a match between Holt and Sloan. “TERRIFIC?” I thought, as I saw them. So basically Earth-1’s Mr. Terrific (this is the point where you go “oh that’s what terrific meant” ) has landed up on Earth-2 by accident, and right there waiting for him is Terry Sloan. The first Mr. Terrific from Earth-1, plain ol’ smartest man here. There's fighting, Sloan wins, cut to next scene! No that’s not a spoiler.
Picking up from last issue, Jay Garrick meets Mercury. Not Max Mercury – MERCURY like the roman god. And it’s time to power up. This issue is all about the birth of the Flash.
I like and don’t like the costume at the same time. Is that possible?
Also if you didn’t already know, ALAN SCOTT IS GAY! (No it’s not a problem for me, I just felt like writing in caps since it seems to be such big news these days) We catch a glimpse of him with his boyfriend.

Week In Review : Astonishing X-Men #50 + COBRA #13 + Dominique Laveau Voodoo Child #3 + Godzilla #1

Here we go folks, more comic goodness for you to read about - including one very in-the-news Marvel comic and some excellent non-superhero and spandex offerings. Enjoy and do feel free to let us know what you thought!

Astonishing X-Men #50 (Marvel)
Story : Marjorie Liu
Art : Mike Perkins (art), Andy Troy (colours)
(Reviewed by Akshay Dhar)
There has been a lot of hype prior to this issues release – all of it centred (as you can well imagine) on the marriage of Northstar (a.k.a Jean-Paul Beaubier) and his boyfriend Kyle. Let me put you at ease, no spoilers beyond saying that there is no marriage in this issue – thats next time around. This is just the build.
Overall a good issue and it continues the fairly stable and good run of stories this title has had since waaaay back when geek-dom's current messiah Joss Whedon launched it's first arcs and shot Shadowcat into space on a giant bullet.
In this issue we find the story continuing from last issue, with our heroes trying to track down the source of their troubles. Iceman, Gambit, Wolverine, War-bird (of the Shi'ar) and Northstar (the first 3 being reason enough for me to read this series!!) are on the trail of whomever sent the Marauders after them all recently and end up with more than they bargained for and still more questions with little in the way of answers. We even get a Black Widow cameo and more mysteries but it all does lead somewhere by the end – where that is we're going to have to, what else, wait a month to find out. We also have the relationship between Northstar and Kyle under further strain and with all manner of emotional drama – which in fairness is actually handled pretty well and all things considered, it felt pretty realistic. A difficult challenge for the best of writers when dealing with 'normal' folks and their issues.

C2E2: New Comic News!!

Good day one and all!

Apologies for a hectic week and not enough comic-y goodness for all of you (largely my fault, but I blame the IPL and various other things for our shortcomings!) but we intend to make up for it and then some in the days to come!

For those of you who follow this stuff, there's a HUGE load of comic news that came out during the recent Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo, popularly known as C2E2 amongst fans. I've been keeping an eye on their news and announcements and have for you here a sumptuous feast of some of the most choice and tender treats to tickle your taste buds!
This post is a special recap where I've tried to put together as much of the news as possible for your geeking-out pleasure (in alphabetical order for general ease of use!).
So let's just get to it shall we?

To kick things off, from the strange and frighteningly awesome Avatar offices:
Michael DiPascale’s new project announced at C2E2 is Hero Worship which will premier in July. Keith says that Avatar Press rarely does superhero comics, noting the exceptions by Warren Ellis, and Christos Gage, saying they don’t do them unless there’s something unique about them. He then describes Hero Worship a bit, telling us Zak Penn will be writing, and it’s a six issue miniseries and is about society’s worship of superheroes and how that can be used to screw the system. The main characters are Adam and Zenith. Adam is a normal boy and Zenith is a Superman-style superhero. Adam is Zenith’s biggest fan, and the book is not really about him, so much as the world around him.

Week In Review: B.P.R.D. : The Pickens County Horror #1 / Bloodstrike #26 / Daredevil #10 / Justice League Dark #7 / The New Deadwardians #1 / Voodoo #7

Welcome fellow ComicAddicts, to another new week of releases - and do we have a load of amazing titles for you guys this week! In fact we had so many great releases that we have more than the usual number today AS WELL AS TOMORROW! So dive in and enjoy!

B.P.R.D. – Hell On Earth : The Pickens County Horror #1 (of 2) (Dark Horse)
Story : Scott Allie
Art : Jason Latour
(Reviewed by Anubhav DasGupta)
None of our usual BPRD players turn up in Pickens County Horror. There’s no Liz Sherman, Abe Sapien or Johann Krauss. Instead, we are treated to two field agents who land up in South Carolina to investigate something about a fog that, well, “moans”. There are Vampires in this issue.
Firstly, this comic is not groundbreaking or mindblowing, but it gets the work done. What really stands out in this issue is the art. I love this Latour guy. This is the only comicbook of his that I’ve read, but he’s impressed me, and I’m totally going to fish around for more of this guy’s work. The amount of character he brings out in each and every panel is amazing. And the nighttime scenes are just brilliant. It also helps that Dave Stewart is handling the colors. I bet his colors would make a page drawn by even Rob-goddamn-Liefeld look good, and with Latour’s art, it not only looks amazing, but also adds to the story.
The pace is just right. This comic takes its time, letting us know the characters before heaping the good stuff on us and ending with our heroes in a questionable situation. This is textbook horror storytelling.

Week-In-Review: Avengers Assemble #1 / Daken: Dark Wolverine #22 / The Ninjettes #2 / Saucer Country #1 / Scarlet Spider #3

Well folks, here's the last set of new issue reviews for this week - hope you enjoy them! As always, if there's any series you want to know about or see reviewed, just drop us a line.
Till next week, happy readings!

Avengers Assemble #1 (Marvel)
Story : Brian Michael Bendis
Art : Mark Bagley, Danny Miki
(Reviewed by Anant Sagar)
AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!!!
I've always wanted to say that, along with a whole bunch of other things.
So anyway, to the point. Avengers Assemble #1. Excellent read. Basically meant to be an easy-to-access series with the team from the upcoming movie meant to serve as accessible to less regular readers.
THE GOOD:
The story is interesting. I like the Avengers cast seen here. I enjoyed the villains that they have. The Zodiac are an interesting concept explored as super-humans, each named after a sigh of the zodiac. So far we see two - one water elemental (probably Pisces) and Taurus. Action sequences are in abundance in this issue, something I really enjoyed, especially since they are really well drawn.
THE BAD:

Wayfarer Special: Top 10 Indie Comics of 2011 (Part 2 of 2)

And so once more into the breach dear friends, as I bring us to the second half of this happy little countdown of the Indie comics that I loved the most this past year. Yes, I know, it's been a long gap since Part 1 of this little countdown and the New Year is well into it's first quarter, but it is what it is - I felt that coverage of our Comic Con in Delhi and all that came out of it took precedence and this could wait just a bit.

Before I get to the final leg of the countdown, a quick listing of the books that almost made it to this top ten but fell just shy. I wish I could have made this list longer and perhaps I will review them all in the near future, but in the meantime I think they all deserve an Honourable mention:
  • The Goon (Writer/Artist: Eric Powell)
  • G.I.Joe Cobra (Writer: Christos Gage and Mike Costa, Artist: Antonio Fuso)
  • Scarlet (Writer: Brian Michael Bendis, Artist: Alex Maleev)
  • Scalped (Writer: Jason Aaron, Artist: R. M. Guéra)
  • Artifacts (Writers: Ron Marz, Marc Silvestri & Matt Hawkins, Artists: Michael Broussard, Stjepan Sejic)
  • Super Dinosaur (Writer: Robert Kirkman, Artist: Jason Howard)
  • Fallen Angel: Return of the Son (Writer: Peter David, Artist: J.K.Woodward)
So thank you for your patience and now without any further rambling along on my part, lets just get to it shall we?

05. HELLBOY

Writer: Mike Mignola w/ John Arcudi
Artist: Various
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics

For those of you that have been following Mike Mignola's worlds as they've evolved in the Hellboy, B.P.R.D and related series, I think you know what I mean when I say that for so many years now they have been the most consistent, creative and amazingly put together comics – among the best comics as a medium have to offer in a sense. For those that have not, you are really missing out on something special.
The various story arcs and such together form such an amazing, long-running and vast story-line and world that it's amazing they've managed it for such a long period of time – and the hand of creator Mike Mignola is definitely visible in every single book, even the one's he has not directly scripted himself. Of course credit where it's due to the talents who've worked with him and been able to strike a nice balance between their own work and style but ever retaining the unique look and feel that Mignola brought to the comic-medium. The truly awesome part being that it remains this damn good even after 17 years!

Saga of the Swamp Thing, Book 4

Writer: Alan Moore
Artists: Stephen Bissette, John Totleben, Stan Woch, Ron Randall, Rick Veitch, Alfredo Alcala
Collects: Swamp Thing issues 43 to 50
Collected under Vertigo

And welcome to yet another installment of everybody's favourite swamp monster. In this collection, Alan Moore spins his epic titled "The American Gothic Saga" which has its roots in book 3, with the introduction of John Constantine. We finally learn what Constantine has been preparing Swampy for all this time in Moore's sprawling and ambitious storyline (though, arguably far from the finest; it's his creepy one and done stories that entice me more) which guest stars almost everybody from DC's horror stable, (Etrigan the Demon, Phantom Stranger, The Spectre, Abel & Cain from the House of Mystery, Zatarra and Zatanna, Doctor Occult, Sargon the Sorcerer, Baron Winter, Steve Dayton) which in itself is a feat, as nobody gets the short shrift here.

After reading Vol 1 (review here) , I trust all of you are here now, are you? Good, then I'll begin in earnest.

Previously, we saw how that the Swamp Thing, contrary to what he thought, was never Alec Holland....his body was a tangle of vegetation with only the consciousness of Alec Holland to guide it. The question is...what happened to the real body of Alec Holland? That question is answered in this issue, when Swamp Thing finally lays the body of Alec Holland to rest. This issue has Shawn McManus as guest artist.

REVIEW: Saga of The Swamp Thing, Book One (Hardcover)

Writer: Alan Moore
Artists: Stephen Bissette, Rick Veitch, John Totleben
Issues Included: Saga of The Swamp Thing #20-27

What do you do when a comic title just doesn't sell anymore? I'm asking "you" not as a reader, but as a publisher, who does this to feed his family, and thousands of other families including the talent, the assistants, the distributors, the stockists and what not!

You cancel the book. Painful to the demographic who has been heartily supporting your book, but it gets done. Look at X-Men. Sixty-six issues into it's initial run (by Stan Lee & Jack Kirby, and later Roy Thomas, Arnold Drake, Neal Adams and more) and the company stopped new issues.

Or you give it to an A-list writer, who'll probably turn him into an A-list character. It's worked with Green Lantern (Geoff Johns), The Incredible Hulk (Peter David), The Flash (Mark Waid), JLA (Grant Morrison) and Neil Gaiman (Black Orchid, Sandman) among others. Hell, did we ever imagine a day when the top selling characters at DC & Marvel would be Green Lantern & Iron Man, respectively?
I for one didn't.

Feel The ENIGMA - A wicked series in review

Enigma was a nasty little 8 issue series from Vertigo wherein the writer takes on everything from crazed vigilantes to road trips, the meaning of life and yes, comic books.

So, what makes this different from other series' that have been lauded as "reinventing" and "reinvigorating" the comics genre?

Several things.

First, we don't know who the so called 'hero' of this drama is. Second.... even he doesn't.
