Review : Tulsidas' Sundarkaand – Triumph of Hanuman

Campire comics takes on Tulsidas’s Ramayan and does a fairly good job.
They give a nice long introduction to Tulsidas and follow that by telling us the story so far, explaining it all crisply and completely.

The storyline is obviously nothing new by itself, so there is little one can and should say about the plot. However what I can go on about are the dialogues. Most of the dialogues are fine, but every now and then, a couple of lines come in that make me do a double-take and go, “What the hell just happened?!”
As much as I love the artwork, I know this style may not appeal to some readers.
Its light on the eyes, rich with more colours than lines and I think it fits well with the style of the epic. It’s the kind of art that feels like it could maybe even have come from the old scriptures and paintings.
The story follows the epic from when the protagonists discover that Sita is in Lanka.
It follows the parts of the Ramayan when Hanuman goes to Lanka to find Sita so that he can tell her that Ram is coming to save her. He also meets and gives Ravan a chance to surrender to the forces of Ram.
This is of coure the part of the story where Hanuman sets Lanka on fire.
It is an interesting artistic take on a popular aspect of the Ramayan. I quite enjoyed it and I hope that Campfire decides to make a full series on the Ramayan.
It reads fairly well, but in my opinion the dialogues could be better. Apart from that it is well made, well thought-out and can serve as a good introduction to those not familiar with Hanuman and the Ramayan.

I give it 10 for the art
7 for the dialogue
No rating on the story
And a 9 for re-readability.

So overall : 8.5 / 10
