Hey folks!! Welcome back to another week - we're running a little late, but here's some of our picks from the week past.
New reviews of this weeks books will be here this weekend so stick around!
B.P.R.D
1948 #2 (Dark Horse)
Story :
Mike Mignola and John Arcudi
Art :
Max Fiumara
(Reviewed

Well
awesome another BPRD book. I cannot get me enough of
these books. They never disappoint and each book leaves me with the
growing realization that the end of the world will be brought about
when Hellboy breaks out of Hell and runs loose - on
Mignola's schedule, not the Mayans'. But that is a personal view.
Anyhow, 1948 serves as a throwback, taking us into a
simpler time when The Professor was still a little green around the
edges and Hellboy was a little monster learning the ropes from his
army family. Which means it is a time when some major reveals can
really happen. But alas, my hopes are undone.
So far.
Alright so
maybe BPRD does disappoint a few times. The first thing that ticked
me off was the artwork. It is well... different. And different
doesn't necessarily mean bad, it just means long term BPRD fans might
be taken aback a bit. Still you get used to it in a page of two. The
story itself is nothing monumental. Another mystery for the Professor
to wrack his brains on. This time centred around a nuclear blast
site. But the characters are pretty cool. The Prof has always been
one of my favourite characters owing to him being useless in the
field. Also there is a love interest around this time. Not to mention
the army squad action is pretty good. There is another mystery in the
works within the squad. Which immediately made me like this comic
more. All in all, is this a hit or a miss series? I dunno, too early
to tell. Is this an enjoyable comic book? Hell yeah.
One point
less for the newish art style.

Captain
America #1 (Marvel)
Story :
Rick Remender
Art :
John Romita Jr & Klaus Jansen
(Reviewed
by Akshay Dhar)
Really?...
Huh... Holy... But... He... What the F... Oooooh!.... Nice!
This was
my response graph over the course of this utterly fantastic first
issue of the new volume of Captain America.
After the
departure of Ed Brubaker who helmed arguably the best
continuous run on the title, I was not sure what to expect –
despite my not-too-secret love of Rick Remender's writing –
but this is not just promising, it's AWESOME! I thought the Green
Skull was going to be one of the stupidest things ever, but the
character and his motivation and methods was so nicely handled in
this short time that he was here, now I want to see more. Couple that
with a highly intriguing and engaging larger story involving another
dimension and an apocalyptic situation with faces familiar and
otherwise, sprinkle in a nice sense of humour for the Captain (one
that suits how I see him) and a breakneck pace leading to a
magnificent cliff-hanger and I'd say we definitely have a winner on
our hands here!
I'm not
the biggest fan of JRJ's art and find his faces and other
details in particular a bit irksome. I don't know if he's gotten
better or it's the other members of the art team, but here his
layouts, his characters, his flow from the first panel to the last –
it's some of the best of his work I've come across and for the first
time in a while I actually enjoyed the hell out of it.
If you're
deciding which books to pick from the MARVEL NOW
initiative to follow, this one definitely gets my seal of approval.

Deadpool
#2 (Marvel)
Story :
Brian Posehn and Gerry Duggan
Art :
Tony Moore
(Reviewed
by Anant Sagar)
So on to
the next issue of Deadpool Now #2!
As we left
him in the first ish, DP had his head shot in by Abe Lincoln. This
issue he regenerates after having some naughty beach dreams involving
Sue Storm, Shulkie, Emma Frost and a cameo by Dazzler.
He revives
to find himself being revived by the ghost of Ben Franklin.
After a
meaningful conversation and an explanation to the agents of
S.H.I.E.L.D, Wade embarks on his mission to stop Teddy Roosevelt from
hunting and killing all the animals in the zoo.
Meanwhile,
Madman has been caught by Washington to resurrect his army so that he
can wage war on America, stating that America’s problem is the
Americans.
So
any-hoo! After taking down Roosevelt, Deadpool and his S.H.I.E.L.D
handlers declare that they need help.
Spoiler:
It’s a sorcerer who’s quite supreme.
Decent
issue. Story is progressing well. I mean what’s not to love about
‘Pool?
