Deadpool #1
(Marvel)
Story : Gerry Duggan & Brian
Posehn
Art : Tony Moore
(Reviewed by Anant Sagar)
(Insert
Morgan Freeman
voice here) “A new era dawns upon us. Marvel has begun
its reboot. Although Deadpool believes it is not a reboot.”
Deadpool finally gets his Marvel
NOW issue #1, and I couldn’t be happier! Now you’re
probably wondering, “What? How is Anant happy with a reboot?”
It’s simple:
1. Deadpool is here. Giving him this
series means he isn’t getting phased out. (like all his other
titles, I miss Deadpool Corps and Deadpool
Team-Up.)
2. Deadpool is fighting ZOMBIES!!!! And
not just any zombies, Presidential Zombies.
3. His healing factor is back!!
We find that Madman has done some
magical mysticism and brought back the Presidents of America, ALL OF
THEM. As Zombies!! (Zombies. He he he)[Shush! We’re doing a
review here]
So anyway, Wade is recruited by
S.H.I.E.L.D (although its hush hush)
to go a-killing the ZPOTUS’s. (the Z is for Zombie)[I’m
pretty sure they got that] (How do you...)[Shhhh]
He’s hired, because they don’t want
any avenger or S.H.I.E.L.D agent seen killing former Leaders of their
nation, even if they are evil zombies hell bent on destroying the
country that Madman wanted them to save.
Oh, did I mention Captain America makes
a cameo. That’s right, he decapitates Zombie S Truman!!
Another cameo comes courtesy Thor as he
and Wade emerge from a Godzilla’s belly! (ha ha ha) [umm you
might want to elaborate] Right, sorry!! They emerge by slicing it
open. [Yeah that’s much better]
So welcome to the NOW ol’
buddy ol’ pal!
It’s been a long time since I had
this much fun. A definite read for everyone, if you know who Deadpool
is (no, not Ryan Reynolds) you have to, HAVE TO read it.

Earth 2 #6
(DC)
Story : James Robinson
Art : Nicola Scott
(Reviewed by Mayank Khurana)
The first arc of Earth 2
wraps up with this issue and does little to convince me that the
reboot has anything positive to offer to the JSA. For new joiners,
JSA or Justice Society of America was the precursor to
JLA (Justice League of America) which included golden
age members such as the original Green Lantern (Alan Scott), the
original Flash (Jay Garrick), Hawk-Man, etc, etc. In the pre-New52
era, the JSA became the legacy team which were respected as the
originals that the younger heroes were inspired by and welcomed new
members to train and mentor. Under the pen of Geoff Johns
and thereafter, JSA was one of the best titles DC had to
offer.
With the new 52 however, we get revised
takes on these classic, golden age character, with changes in costume
and a (over-hyped) sexual inclination of a certain member.
I am all for change if it reinvigorates
the title. Here however, change seems only to be for the sake of
change. I wanted to go out of my way and mention that I really
despise the new Flash design. Doesn't work for me at all. Also, get a
new logo GL, this one belongs to Ion (the Kyle Rayner
version)
The story is very weak and walks all
the tropes of a standard superhero comic. Over the past few issues,
the recently emerged "wonders" - Flash, Green Lantern,
Hawk-Girl and Atom - have been fighting Solomon Grundy (all
characters you recognize only in name), which concludes this issue
and arc in one of the most standard ways i.e., defeating the villain.
The defeated villain however is alive and well, and is sure to return
sometime in the future, just by virtue of where he is at the end of
the storyline. If you have been reading Animal Man and
Swamp Thing, you would recognize that there is a
connection being built here between Earth-2 and those books, which to
be honest is a tad too much. Everything doesn't need to connect Mr.
Didio! Ask your writers to focus in good stories, not connecting the
dots.
Did I mention I really despise Flash's
new costume? It really sucks!
This books reads like an Else-world's
tale, and that too a substandard one. It feels like Mr. Robinson just
freely relieved himself over the iconic and brilliant JSA run of
comics prior to this reboot. The only saving grace is the art,
handled by Nicola Scott and she kicks ass every page she
draws.
