Week In Review : Deadpool #1 + Earth 2 #6

...and more madness for this week as we play catch-up! Other reviews for the week are HERE and these two wrap up our picks of the new comics this week.
Stick around and we'll have more coming hot and fresh to your plate asap!

Deadpool #1 (Marvel)
Story : Gerry Duggan & Brian Posehn
Art : Tony Moore
(Reviewed by Anant Sagar)
(Insert Morgan Freeman voice here) “A new era dawns upon us. Marvel has begun its reboot. Although Deadpool believes it is not a reboot.”
Deadpool finally gets his Marvel NOW issue #1, and I couldn’t be happier! Now you’re probably wondering, “What? How is Anant happy with a reboot?”
It’s simple:
1. Deadpool is here. Giving him this series means he isn’t getting phased out. (like all his other titles, I miss Deadpool Corps and Deadpool Team-Up.)
2. Deadpool is fighting ZOMBIES!!!! And not just any zombies, Presidential Zombies.
3. His healing factor is back!!

Week In Review : AvX Consequences #4 + Bedlam #1

It's been a big week folks and we had some great comics reviewed for you and now we bring the final new-release reviews for the past week - two monster reviews of books you really should be checking out in our estimation. Enjoy!
- Akshay the Amused

AvX Consequences #4 of 5 (Marvel)
Story : Kieron Gillen
Art : Mark Brooks
(Reviewed by Mayank Khurana)
Who knew that the mediocre AvX summer event could lead to such a fantastic series!
For me it was all marked by inscrutable agendas, out-of-character actions and an overdone “fight first-speak later” mentality. The entire event left a sour taste, despite it being a culmination of so many story lines that I've been following and collecting avidly these last eight years.
I'd almost decided to not read AvX : Consequences as I thought it'd be a cash grab from the “House of Ideas” and didn't think that it would matter. Shows how much I know! I only picked it up because of the writer attached to it, Keiron Gillen, the man behind the awesome Journey Into Mystery and a brilliant run on Thor. He once again rewarded my faith in him by making AvX Consequences THE story to follow if you are remotely interested in the mutant side of Marvel-U.

Marvel NOW Review: Uncanny Avengers #1 + Red She-Hulk #1

The big world-changing, ground-breaking, soul-shaking (yadda, yadda, blah, blah, insert more standard hype here, etc...) event that has been building over at the House of Ideas is finally here!Marvel NOW officially launched last week with the first of the new wave of titles - Uncanny Avengers and Red She-Hulk.
Today our own dynamic(-ish) duo of Mayank and Akshay take us through them both to see whether these measured up to all the hype!

Red She-Hulk #1
Script : Jeff Parker
Art : Carlo Pugalayan & Wellington Alves (pencils), Val Staples (colours)

Mayank says:
The second release under the “Marvel Now” banner for last week. The focus of Hulk shifts from father to daughter, from Red Hulk (RULK) to Red She Hulk (Betty Ross), while Rulk moves to the new team of Thunderbolts (along with Elektra and Punisher.. man that’s gonna rock!). Jeff parker continues to play around with the concepts he introduced and I gotta say man, I am loving this book. This title isn’t going to change your life, it’s not going to make you think or try to prove its relevance by using real world scenarios or create pseudo-reasons for a hero vs hero fight... but this is the most fun I had reading a comic book in quite some time.

Comic Review : Aveon 9 (volume 1)

The Plot

Humans have left Earth and moved to another planet called Aveon 9 because Earth was left uninhabitable by natural disasters. Here, over a period of time, humans have ensconced themselves as the ruling class, surpassing the native species' and have carved out dynasties among themselves. Their kingdom however is not peaceful nor does the entire native population support their rise. The story begins with the unfortunate accident of Counselor Zane of the House of Lunus in the city of Vexadus. It then shifts to follow the endeavours of Zane's son Tez, as he tries to find his way to the city to locate his father. This volume ends with Tez minutes away from entering the city.

And now on to the review.

Special Interview : "Aghori" writer spills some beans!

All right folks! The wait is over... We have been teasing you with hints of an inside scoop about Holy Cow Entertainment’s (a.k.a HCE) next Magnum Opus – “Aghori” - and now your wait is ended!

For those of you not familiar with the basics of how this came to be : HCE was started by super-star artist Vivek Goel to be a creator owned and run publishing house, a rare feat anywhere in the world, with emphasis on always having excellent art and a style all it's own. They kicked off with the release of the horror/fantasy/therianthropy based Werehouse : Home of Monsters v1 which introduced them with a bang featuring three unique stories with different writers. This success was followed closely by the current fan-favourite re-telling of one of India's greatest saga's (from the other side of the fight) – Ravanayan. You should check this stuff out to whet your appetite before this new series that's going to be one of the flagship titles from HCE, hits the bookshelves and stands!

Read ahead now as we bring to you an exlusive rapid-fire interview with the writer of the series – Ram V. – and start to peel away the layers of mystery around the project.

Week In Review: Danger Club #1 / O.M.A.C #8 / Supreme #63 / Voltron Year One #1 (DOUBLE REVIEWED)

Danger Club #1 (Image)
Story : Landry Q. Walker
Art : Eric Jones
(Reviewed by Akshay Dhar)
F*** Yeah!!!
If there's a new superhero comic to try and a new world to explore – this would be it!
It's only the first issue.
I was amused in the first couple of pages which are done very nicely like a good old silver age comic that give us character names (like Kid Monstro and Apollo) and a feel for how this new world works with the superheroes that are like the Teen Titans of this world.
Then it throws it all out the window.
Picture a bunch of characters that are like alternate-universe-young-adult-versions of all your favourites like Kid Vigilante (Batman!), Apollo (Superman, duh!), Fearless (Nick Fury), etc... Now picture an Earth where all the superheroes left to combat some great threat in space months ago and now... well, lets just say that things are not looking good and Apollo has lost his marbles more than a little. I'm not saying the characters are direct rip-offs, but one can see parallels and archetypes at play here when creating the style and characteristics of all of them.

Week-In-Review: Fantastic Four #603 / Witchblade and Red Sonja #1 / Prophet #22

Well folks, as promised, we have part 2 of this week's comic reviews for your pleasure and we hope you like the titles we've chosen. As always, if there are any series' at all that you would like to see reviewed as they release - all you have to do is ask!
Fantastic Four #603
Story: Jonathan Hickman
Art: Barry Kitson
(Review by Akshay Dhar)
I've never been the biggest fan of Fantastic Four comics beyond the early years under Kirby and Lee, a few good ones here and there but rarely have I consistently enjoyed what is otherwise one of the most landmark, unique and iconic team books in comics. Until Hickman. From now on when it comes to the FF there is the era B.H. (before Hickman) and A.H. as far as I'm concerned and if you've been following his work from his takeover through the launch of the ongoing FF (a.k.a Future Foundation) and the recent relaunch of Fantastic Four, then you know exactly what I mean.
Not a story-heavy issue, this is just part of the final moments of what Hickman has been building for quite a while now with the multi-Reed storyline, the time and space travelling Richards' children all growed-up and all the other little bits that have been weaving around – not to mention the death and VERY recent return (with style I might add!) of Johnny Storm, a.k.a, the Human Torch. We get some funky science, deadly cosmic weapons, Galactus kicking arse and laying the smack-down, Negative Zone armies now ruled by Johnny, lost kids and twists still forming as others unravel and this is a relatively simple issue for what has been a great time with a book (now two books if you include this and FF both). Barry Kitson does a fantastic job on the art and the massive scale action scenes play out really well while never getting in the way of the story, a nice balance.

Week-In-Review: All-Star Western #6 / No Place Like Home #1 / The Flash #6

Hey folks! Welcome to another week of new comics and this week we again split our review into two because we just had too many comics to review (it's a dirty job but someone's gotta do it!) and so we bring you three spectacular new comics today:

All-Star Western #6
Story: Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti
Art: Moritat (w/ Gabriel Bautista on colours)
(Review by Akshay Dhar)
There is little anyone can say about this series except that it is without a doubt one of the best things to come out of DC's “New 52” relaunch.
Jonah Hex has always been one of the most popular cult characters and under the pen of Gray and Palmiotti, one of the better non capes-n-tights comics on the market consistently. But this relaunch that brought Hex to ye-olde-Gotham back in the day, bringing the rugged outdoorsman and vagabond into the confines of a city really put things in a different direction and allowed a whole new kind of Jonah Hex story, mingling the standard western adventure he is known for with a hint of the just-south-of-normal that was a hallmark of his tales for a long time.
We get a conclusion to the big mystery this time around as Hex and his unintentional partner Dr. Arkham race to learn the fate of the kidnapped children of Gotham and fight a giant demonic bat along the way – just another day in the life of Hex. With a satisfying ending that isn't quite an ending but a nice and neat lead-in to the next issue that gives us a sweet little teaser of what to expect and a whole new guest star/partner for Hex, I would say I'm loving the way this book is being handled and hope it stays around at least for a while.
The back-up story (another comic practice I miss!) stars the mysterious lady known as the Barbary Ghost as she continues on her hunt for vengeance and so far has been well told and the character fairly nicely put forward so this promises to be another welcome addition to monthly reading for those who like these hardy frontier characters in this wild world.
The art is without reproach in both stories and the combination of art and colouring carries a wonderfully faded grittiness to it that really brings out every mood and facet of the excellent layouts and detailing and I look forward to much more of the same in issues ahead!
SCORE : 8.5 / 10

Week In Review 09.01.2012 : New Comics Mega-post!

Week-In-Review time folks!!
This week it's Animal Man #5 + Batwing #5 + Vampirella vs. Dracula #1 + Witchblade #151 + Avengers Annual #1 + Fatale #1 + The Lil' Depressed Boy #8!

This week three of the team have gotten together to give you one HUGE mega-review post, bringing you the best, brightest and most popular comics out this week!

Anupam's Reviews

Animal Man #5
Story: Jeff Lamire
Art: Travel Foreman
Writer Jeff Lemire's bought one of the under dogs of DC and turned him into a full on horror filled (new) Animal Man! Be it horror, superhero or simply comic book fans, this one shouldn't be a miss. Plus the visuals really set the book apart and puts it in the way too (horribly) dreadful category!
SCORE : 9.5/10

Batwing #5 (featuring a special appearance by Batman!)
Story: Judd Winick
Art: Ben Oliver
I would call this more of a character development story rather than a 'story' I would wanna see in a comic. The art overall gives a very realistic feel, which matches the story perfectly.
And don't get fooled by Bats's special appearance, practically there was no need of him to be there at all! Probably an idea by writer or editorial team to include him in order to raise the sells.
SCORE : 7/10

More to Shonen then meets the eye!! (or ear...)

Hello manga fans, old and new!!

Tired of people recommending the same old titles like One piece, Bleach or Naruto when you ask them about good Shonen to read? Sick of finding no good feedback on anything but books that have been out for ages and/or long over instead of something more current? Well have to fear - your friendly neighbourhood ComicAddicts are here!

To remedy this reprehensible situation our team has debated and finally made a shortlist which we now present to you, of five currently ongoing shonen manga (in no particular order) that you might want to try out:

Blue Exorcist
The Son of Satan takes the fight to Satan by deciding to become an exorcist. Of course in typical shonen fashion he isn’t a very good exorcist, but he has plenty of raw power that he would need to control and master to be able to beat Satan! Varies from good to awesome, but the awesome is definitely pure awesome.
