Army of Darkness #2
(Dynamite)
Story : Elliot R. Serrano
Art : Marat Mychaels
(Reviewed by Akshay Dhar)
He's baaaaack!!!
Sweet!
For those who haven't guessed already,
Ash Williams a.k.a. the most hard-a** demonite killer and one of the
most awesome movie characters of all time finally makes his entrance
into the story in this new issue – and what an entrance it is
indeed!
We saw the new 'chosen one' last issue
getting herself a massive overdose of what she can expect in that
role and then some more and still more to follow. That continues this
issue as she is looking for the man himself, but thankfully that
takes a backseat/cameo sort of role as we get to see the character
made famous by the legendary Bruce Campbell (under Sam Raimi's
direction...) drive right into our minds again, boom-stick in hand
and a whoooole mess of wicked new weaponry to play with and give
company to the trusty old chainsaw!
It's not the greatest epic saga or
anything like that – it's just good, bloody, violent and
damned-hilarious fun for everyone. Just like the Evil Dead trilogy
that it spins off from. Sure there's a running under-current/bigger
story about Chosen Ones and something coming and blah, blah – but
it's all just the build up to the finale and such, it's the journey
that's the kicker here and I think judging by these first issues that
it's going to be a good one!
What I'm very grateful for in this
issue is that it was visible somewhat in the first but clearly
Mychaels has taken his art forward and now is no longer just a (ugh!)
Leifeld wannabe and has developed his abilities so that it actually
looks pretty decent all said and done.

Batman #7
(DC)
Story : Scott Snyder
Art : Greg Capullo
(Reviewed by Anupam Sarker)
Having read Batman comics for quiet a
long time, I can say that Issue 7 is the best there is till date.
On the first page, we see Snyder and
Capullo redo the scene from Frank Miller's Year One, the one where
young and beaten Bruce, while sitting in front of his father's bust
thinks how he could protect Gotham. Suddenly he sees a bat and speaks
out, “ Yes father, I shall become a bat”. And that's how we
remember the scene, but Snyder brings a twist to it. According to the
issue, the bat then flies through the window and is caught by an owl,
which eats it later. The only word that fits the particular visual is
“EPIC”.
The issue is not the action- packed
ones, but the revelation ones. We get to know how the Court of Owls
manage to bring Talons back from the dead and also about a creepy
relation between the Talons and Dick Grayson.
Issue 7 brings the creative team to its
peak. Snyder's brilliant story, Capullo's masterful visuals and FCO's
awesome colors. The issue's got it all.
SCORE : 10 / 10
(and I am not being generous)
Kick Ass 2 #7
(Icon)
Story : Mark Millar
Art : John Romita Jr.
(Reviewed by Anant Sagar)
This issue is dedicated to street
fighting. Yes!! I thought as I got my hands on the issue. Little did
I know what waited in store for me!
The Good:
The story so far has been interesting.
We all know the story on Kick Ass 1. With 2 Miller has pulled out all
the stops. Loads of action this issue. Large amounts of blood and
gore. This was an all out, smash mouth, jaw punching, crotch kicking,
bone breaking issue. Definite must read for all of you who like fast
paced action in your comics. The script was excellent. I love the
whole “real-life people as superhero’s” concept he has stayed
with.
The Bad:
Hit Girls dialogs seemed to be too, how
should I put it... predictable. It’s almost as if she is being made
to say things just to make people laugh. The finale disappoints me a
little. I mean after everything that has happened, after everything
that’s gone down between Kick Ass and Red Mist, I expected more. I
expected more to the story on what happens now. The ending was a
little abrupt for a final issue.
The Funny:
Red Mist and Kick Ass, acting like
children going, “You F*** off” “No you F*** off.” - to which
Hit girl says, “Will one of you p*****s at least throw a punch?”
A random headless costumed guy telling
someone dressed like a ‘goth p***k’ to ‘suck his b***s’
Hit girl cutting Mother Russia’s head
off and saying, ‘Relax, I’m just making sure she’s definitely
dead’
Kick Ass kicking Red Mist right between
the legs. (Always funny)
I give it an overall 8...why? because
the action is intense!! (My yellow boxes like action)

Rebel Blood #1

Story : Alex Link
Art : Riley Rossmo
(Reviewed by Akshay Dhar)
Holy S**t!!
I cannot begin to describe this to you
folks – it's arguably the best and most innovative approach to the
zombie-horror genre of comics I've seen in forever and so far the
most engaging and exciting since near a decade ago when The
Walking Dead first came out.
Twisted, terrifying and harsh. The
basic story follows an outbreak of a plague that converts everything
into a feral beast – people, animals, birds, everything – and we
follow a firefighter who was stationed at a tower in the forest
(presumably to watch for forest fires and such) who is on his own at
the time and finds himself faced with this, alone except an unknown
person on his comm-radio who claims to be trapped in a room by the
creatures.
Just picture it though, the animal
aspect is something that was touched on with the dead dogs in the
Resident Evil movies, but this comic really makes you realise how
scary it would be to not only be running from infected people but
also from any animal you might see. A pigeon, a stray dog, a cat,
rats – anything!!
Freaky isn't it?
The score it receives here is actually
a bit lower than what I was going to give it at first but that's only
because the story-telling is quite confounding and disjointed after
the initial pages – though never bad, it's quite confusing and I
hope fervently that they can make issue #2 a little clearer in terms
of what's going on or at least start clearing some of it up. The art
however I found to fit the story they are telling quite well. There
were points and panels at which they could have been a little clearer
or better rendered, but overall I found the art works.
Already having master-minded one of
Image's recent wave of hits – Green Wake – Link and Rossmo have
really created something special here and if you like zombie plagues,
then you REALLY need to be checking this book out!
SCORE : 8 / 10
