Art : John

After Brian Bendis
set the stage for this epic conflict between two of Marvel’s
biggest franchises a mere fortnight ago, this week sees the launch of
Avengers vs. X-Men #2, with John Romita Jr. continuing on
artwork.
The issue mainly
features an out and out brawl between the two teams on the shores of
Utopia as the Phoenix Force draws nearer to the Earth.

The Story:
All said and done, I
really don’t think Jason Aaron was the right person to write this
issue. I see Aaron as the type of writer who puts a spotlight firmly
on character, however the all-out-hell-breaking-loose nature of this
issue and the need to say all that is to be said within the fighting,
seems to be more Bendis or Fraction’s forte.

Aaron’s knack for
innovation, in the form of plenty of wit and epic-ness, do go a long
way in making the issue interesting amidst all the fighting, but it
feels a lot like camouflage to mask the fact that this issue does not
take the story forward very much. While it certainly is a fun issue
and the intention is giving us an action packed issue with plenty of
time in the form of 10 issues (and plenty of tie-ins still left) to
tell the broader, deeper story, I still can’t shake off the feeling
that Aaron’s skills have been wasted for this issue.

John Romita Jr., on
the other hand, has always specialized in action sequences, and while
the work looks just a little rushed and the panels a little
cluttered, Romita’s immense knack for visual storytelling takes the
issue to the ‘win’ category. There’s definitely a very noteable
improvement with the art quality from Romita’s recent Avengers run,
thanks in part to some much better work on inks and colours.
Final
Thoughts:
(some spoilers here!)
Now that the
violence has been done and dusted with here, it should be interesting
to see where some of the story beats initialized in this issue -
namely Hope’s escape, the Avengers team in space, The Scarlet
Witch’s role in all this and Panther and Storm’s marital troubles
- head to, as the event progresses.
