Archer and Armstrong #1
(Valiant)
Story : Fred Van Lente
Art : Clayton Henry
(Reviewed by Akshay Dhar)
The world is wiped clean, a new one
arise - secret sects, immortals, a spiritual quest, mythos, clever
religiosity, fighting. Yeah, this issue has a lot going for it.
Tells the story of a deadly young
warrior named Obidiah Archer, trained in multiple martial arts –
but looks to be barely out of his teens – who is a religious
zealot, trained since childhood by his parents (who are heads of a
quasi-religious/christian-y cult/sect) to be a warrior with a
mission. And then he is sent out into the REAL world – for the
first time in his life. His first “friend” is a familiar looking
fellow named Armstrong who drinks and bounces at a bar where
Archer... creates some ruckus. And then things start to get crazier
and a wee bit scarier – for Archer anyway.
Nicely written out with a sufficient
amount of character development and a good mix of plot building,
action and a hint of humour, the issue was a joy to read and I was
sad to see it finish.
There's allusions to religion, to history and
potentially to all kinds of interesting fields/areas that could make
for a great series – I think Valiant has another strong new start
to a series here, personally I've loved X-O Manowar and Bloodshot's
early issues and this one just keeps that bar high. This folks, is
how a company relaunches books. This is a reboot done right – I
wish DC would fire Dan-bloody-moron-Didio and his ilk and learn from
this for the future.
But I'm torn about this comic. On the
one hand, it's a first issue and as a kick-starter it is
entertaining, interesting and has some nice action. But I've had
hit-or-miss luck with liking Van Lente's writing so here's hoping he
keeps the issues to come as awesome as this one!

Deadpool #59
(Marvel)
Story : Daniel Way
Art : Salva Espin
(Reviewed by Anant Sagar)
Remember how last issue I made a joke
on how everyone black is out to get Deadpool?! No I’m not being
racist, I meant Black Box, Black Swan and Black Tom Cassidy.
Well Deadpool made the same joke this
issue. Makes you wonder if the whole breaking-the-fourth-wall thing lets
him steal my jokes???
Anyhoo, when we left off last time,
Black Tom was the next recruit of Black Box's to go after Wade. Now in
this issue they are already fighting their backsides off.
An altogether interesting story arc
(since Deadpool lost his healing factor, not the "Blacklisted" arc, which is essentially two issues so far). As mentioned
earlier many a time, it’s great to see how Wade actually functions
without the healing factor, he still doesn’t have his finger back.
Why? Because limbs don’t just grow back like that.
This comic is ridiculous, in a good
way. This is a Deadpool we haven’t seen. A Deadpool who is the
chasee and not the chaser. A Deadpool who may actually be smart and
not just plain nuts (Although there is a fine line between genius and
insanity)
The absence of the healing factor and a
non scarred face adds new elements for him. Which I’m beginning to
like.
For this issue though I’ll give it a SCORE of 7.5 / 10 - I feel it could have been crazier!
Idolized #1
(Aspen MLT)
Story : David Schwartz
Art : Micah Gunnell
(Reviewed by Akshay Dhar)
It's nice to see a new offering from
the house that the late-great Michael Turner built – and
even nicer to see one that is NOT part of either Turners Fathom
or Soulfire series' for a change. Plus a special
edition with a live-model cover starring the lovely Rachel Clark
of Victorias Secret definitely helps!

| the Rachel Clark variant... hoooot! |
Some of you may have read the recent
issue #0 of this new title, but just in case : the basic story of
Idolized is (as the cover hints strongly) about a superhero version
of eternal TV trash-basket realtiy contests, particularly (bleh!)
American Idol, and follows the journey of our heroine (?) Leslie
Linnell a.k.a., Joule as she enters and makes her way through the
contest. The twist here however is given in #0 whereby she briefly
tells us that she won the contest, became a big-super and then
somehow bringing about some serious end-of-the-world-ish mojo while
on her quest to kill the big-bad. But that we have to read the series
to find out, which is at once enticing and frustrating.
Issue #1 here does the job of starting
the story by showing us the character, bringing out her backstory of
parents murdered in a super-fight between this worlds JLA/Avengers
type team and a big-bad who I get a strong impression right from the
start, might not be all that bad. There's hints about corporate and
government controling the heroes, greed, glitz and glamour along with
the games to come – but in the end I found myself amused but a
little underwhelmed by the whole thing.
Gunnell, a veteran here at Aspen
MLT, does a good job as usual – though I'm not crazy about his
style – but his art is not enough to save a story that starts out
seeming somewhere between cliché and trying too hard. I'd go so far
as to say Image's recent America's Got Powers
series is more interestingly handled.
That said, it's not a bad comic and
might find a readership and in fact get much better once some more
details emerge, but as a first issue I'm not jumping for joy.

Pathfinder #1
(Dynamite)
Story : Jim Zub
Art : Andrew Huerta
(Reviewed by Anant Sagar)
“Paizo's incredible award-winning,
best-selling fantasy world, fiction line and tabletop RPG is now the
ultimate fantasy comic from Dynamite Entertainment!”
That’s what I read when I was trying
to figure out what Pathfinder was.
"Sounds good." I thought, plus they did a damn
good job with the WarCraft comics, so in my opinion "how bad could this
be?". Little did I know I was in for the time of my life!
Our story involves Warrior and prayer
interrupter Valeros, who relies on his sword and strength, the lovely
sorcerer Seoni and the essential ass kicking elf maiden Merisiel.
The story so far involves the goblins
going nuts and attacking people in broad daylight. Which, as we know,
is completely out of style for them!
From the looks of it, the tribes are
merging, getting ready for war.
Be ready for awesome artwork - lovely
detailing and fantasy armour is always cool.
Intriguing storyline. I like how it
flows. But then again I love fantasy epics and stuff.
Reads well, has action, humour and
magic.
I would say a must read if you’re
into fantasy and/or RPG’s.
SCORE : 8 / 10
