Week In Review : B.P.R.D. Hell On Earth Exorcism #2 + Debris #1 + Star Wars Blood Ties Boba Fett Is Dead #4

B.P.R.D. Hell On Earth Exorcism #2 (of 2) (Dark Horse)
Story : Mike Mignola and Cameron Stewart
Art : Cameron Stewart

The best part about a two comic story arc. Is that it has to be sharp and slickly done. You wont find useless filler villains, or feints and counter feints. There isnt any room for them. What you would expect is direct storyline, no holds barred. And that is exactly what you get. In spades.
Exorcism, deals with one of the many secrets of BPRD. One of the many tangents in this Hell on Earth where the agency interfered without even know what it was interfering in. And must now bear the price. An ancient Demon of great power and potency was imprisoned on this Earth. Its time of freedom now at hand, BPRD Agent Ashley Strode will venture into realms best left untouched to complete her mission.
A wonderful throwback to the old spooky Hellboy storylines, this comic works wonderfully. The artwork is just plain awesome, and the writing as always top notch. If you are looking for a good
mystery/horror short story look no further than this. (And then read everything else of BPRD). My only gripe with the story was I wish it were longer. Not in the fanboy sense longer, but longer so that there were more details revealed. Come on BPRD, stop playing things so close to the chest.

Debris takes place in a post-apocalytic, shinier steam-punk world, one with mechanical emus and giant robot Midgard serpent-like creatures.
It’s all beautifully drawn, and decently written, but it’s not written well enough.
Firstly, the art is pretty good. Muted, but brilliant colors reminiscent of what’s going on in Flash. The linework itself is strong and delicate at the same time. The art is simply brilliant. Even the more epic scenes, that would make some great artists fumble, are handled wonderfully.
The dialogue succeeds in making it truly feel like a post apocalyptic world, and at times it attains great heights. And it’s always nice to see a strong female character gracing the pages of a comicbook. Here we have red haired Calista, who in the first few pages takes down a towering “Collossal” with a spear. The book does a fairly good job of establishing the characters. What it doesn’t do well is the world-building. The writer just jumps into the story and drags us along whether we like it or not. I feel that the world building would have made this comic work a lot better. It would have elevated it from being a good comic to a great comic.
Well, it’s only issue one… Maybe I’ve been too spoilt by Saga, but what the hell.
I’m curious as to where this comic will go. This is one of those comics that get better with each issue, I guess.

Star Wars Blood Ties - Boba Fett Is Dead #4 (Dark Horse)
Story : Tom Taylor
Art : Chris Scalf

Another epic conclusion to another epic Boba Fett storyline. Boba Fett, chased and hunted across the galaxy, presumed dead is now back from the dead. And he has retribution on his mind. The hunted him down, then they hunted all who were close to him. And its payback time.
Not much to say about this comic book except to say, "Called It!". I mean come on. You make a comic book called 'Boba Fett is dead', you know that green helmeted Mando is coming back in the last issue to kick some serious ass. And he does. Artwork/writing are fair enough. Dark Horse have been at the whole Star Wars game for a while now and know what they are doing. And the story is gripping enough.
But you wont ever feel surprised in this comic book. (especially this last issue). Cause we all know Boba Fett is a badass. That isnt news for us, and all this comic really does is reinforce the idea. His half brother was an interesting character and kudos on providing some exposure on his wife and daughter. But you know a Star Wars comic book just isnt that hot if your favourite character in the comic happens to be Boba Fett's daughter. So yeah, Star Wars buffs go right ahead...I dont know how well it will sit with anybody else though.
