reviews!
(Psst! And of course, drop back in
tomorrow for more reviews!)
Deadpool #58
(Marvel)
Story : Daniel Way
Art : Salvador Espin
(Reviewed by Anant Sagar)
So epic-ness continues in this issue as
Deadpool faces off against Black Swan. No not Natalie Portman
from the movie, I’m talking about an assassin from back in
Deadpool’s past.
He was apparently the best. That is
until Deadpool killed him......or so he thought.
Over the course of the issue we find
out that Taskmaster had told Black Box that Wade doesn’t have a
healing factor anymore. So now BB wants Wade dead. He finds Black
Swan to tell him that he can kill him now.
Swan catches Wade on the toilet while
he’s taking a... um... #2. Insists that he flushes before he dies.
Wade dodges and jumps into the bathtub which has an ANTI BALLISTIC
SHOWER CURTAIN!! I was like WHAT???
So anyhow, Swan dies. Again!
But that doesn’t deter Black Box.
Turns out now that BB has the info that Wade can die, he’s going to
be making a lot of calls to a lot of people. Because we all know how
many people want him dead, and next in Black box’s list is BLACK
TOM CASSIDY.
What is it with this guy and BLACK?
Black Box, Swan, and now Tom.
Funny issue, fast paced and the art and
story is good. Wade seems to be getter smarter, but just as goofy as
ever. So far I like the way this comic is going.
SCORE : 8 / 10
Wolverine and the X-Men #14
(Marvel)
Story : Jason Aaron
Art : Jorge Molina
(Reviewed by Anant Sagar)
This is by far one of the strangest
X-Men issues I’ve read in a while. Maybe it’s because my
following of wolverine and the X-Men and the Avengers vs X-men
titles have been minimal for some reason.
Back to the issue.
Now for those of you following, you
will know that some of the X-men are now hosts for the Phoenix force.
Yes the same force that possessed Jean Gray. In this issue we see
Magik, Colossus and Cyclops who have the phoenix force.
We see how much they’ve changed. How
they’re no longer the people that were known and loved. They are
locking up avengers, doing pretty much whatever they want. They think
themselves Gods. Granted they're doing good, like repairing a fault
line so there are no more quakes, making rivers in Africa etc. But we
all know that there are ways for heroes to do things. AND LOCKING UP
OTHER HEROS IS NOT COOL!!!
Now it is interesting to see
Phoenix+Colossus (Phoen-lossus?) split the sea to have a meal with
Kitty Pryde, and try to convince her that he’s still the same. Then
snapping when she says he’s changed and she wants to go back to the
school.
Phoen-lossus then proceeds to destroy
stuff on the school property including Jean’s statue. But has a
change of heart.
The issue is interesting to say the
least. It seems like it’s going to get stranger and stranger. But
hey, strange can be good.
Because it make me go WTF??? I’m
giving it a 7 on 10
X-Treme X-Men #1
(Marvel)
Story : Greg Pak
Art : Stephen Segovia (pencils),
Dennis Crisostomo (inks) and Jessica Kholinne (colours)
(Reviewed by Akshay Dhar)
Best. X-comic. Ever.
Okay, maybe not the best for sure, but
most definitely the single most badass start an X-comic has had in my
experience and it promises super-scribe (and a personal favourite!)
Greg Pak is finally back to his game after seeing his
legend-making work on The Incredible Hulk and Planet
Hulk ruined by editorial mandate! Sweetness!!!
Anyway, for those of you that were,
like me, mad about a little old comic Marvel put out a few years back
called Exiles this will be a joyous leap back to
familiar territory. For the rest, here's the drill :
An alternate reality mish-mash team of
X-men comprising of alternate versions of Wolverine (of course...),
Nightcrawler/Kurt (he's back here AND in X-Force?
AWESOME!) and Emma Frost (as b****y as ever!) who were working with a
team of one hundred Prof. X heads in jars (yes you read that
right...) and start the comic off by teleporting the entire human
population of a dying Earth to an uninhabited alternate Earth. Yeah.
That's just the first three pages.
Anyway – they recruit our reality's
Dazzler (a fan fav but always under-used) and together with the a
floaty Xavier head-in-a-jar are bound to hop realities and stop a
series of uber-evils. This is indeed the stuff truly great comics are
made of and Pak does a great job of infusing some character into his
team and bringing Dazzlers out nicely in the middle of all the action
and craziness, which gives a killer start and really has me
salivating (almost) for issue #2 and makes me believe that this might
become something truly special.
Simple but brilliant, lovely formula!
And the trio on art really nails
things. I found that between the nicely rendered art and character
designs (and a pretty killer colour palette) and the story I was so
engrossed that I felt hard-pressed to find flaws in the artwork and
having noticed none that I can recall or anything that stood out as
overly negative, I'm going to go with a seriously heavy
recommendation on this one – We need to support more comics like
this one!
SCORE : 10 / 10
