Special Review: Dark Horse Presents #8

Today folks, we have a very special review of a new comic released this past week. It's a single comic but is so huge and loaded with talented creators' work that we felt deserved a reviewing all its own. This edition of Dark Horse Presents is brought to you by various writers and artists including John Arcudi, Brian Wood, Howard Chaykin, Neal Adams, Andi Watson, Al Gordon, MJ Butler, Beau Smith, Duncan Fegredo, Geof Darrow, Kristian Donaldson, Thomas Yeates, Mark Wheatley, Eduardo Barreto and has been reviewed by one of our newest additions to the Comic Addicts family, Mr. Anubhav DasGupta:

I’ve been following DHP somewhat sporadically, and checked out this issue mainly because it carried a few Hellboy/BPRD and Beasts of Burden features, and although they were amazing (and probably the best of the bunch), I found myself staying back for a few more of the stories.

The Neal Adams and Howard Chaykin features just went over my head, but I guess that’s because I haven’t checked out the previous parts. But the post-apocalyptic Tarzan story (that celebrates the franchise’s 100^th anniversary), the Time-travel story, the aforementioned Hellboy epilogue and Beasts of Burden short are nothing shy of amazing. Writing and art on all of these are absolutely amazing, nothing short of brilliant.

Back in Issue 5, readers were introduced to the “Anti-Superman Army” who - for unknown reasons - travel back to the past to steal the power source of the rocket that sent Supes to Earth, a.k.a. Kryptonite, which they intend to use to put an end to Superman!

Issue 6 starts with a meet between the Anti-Superman Army and a scientist who extracted the Kryptonite from the rocket's engine.

He also explains that the Kryptonite can be used to create different colors of Kryptonite , which will have different effects on Superman.

The last issue introduced us to Superman from five years into the future from the Action Comics's time-period as well as the Legion of Super-Heroes' founding members (Cosmic Man, Lightning Man and Saturn Woman).

In this issue, we see the Legion trying to to get the Kryptonite back from the Anti-Superman Army and the scientist who are in a hollow lead pellet inside Superman's brain! (Now that sounds insane)

Readers also get a look at some of Superman's childhood memories which are unlocked when Saturn Woman accesses his memory in order to search for the hollow lead pellet.

The issue introduces some crazy yet awesome sci-fi stuff and all the genius stuff that Morrison is known for, while the art by Andy Kubert is just stunning.

Remembering Ian Abercrombie

Ian Abercrombie may not be a name that you recognize. You may recognize the face, but are having a hard time to really place him. Ian Abercrombie is a character actor. He's known mostly for playing butlers such as in 'Jurassic Park The Lost World' or 'Garfield a Tale of Two Kitties'. If you were ever a fan of the show 'Seinfeld' he was Elaine's boss.

So why are we here at Comic Addicts paying tribute to a butler? Ian Ambercombie made two great contributions to geek culture. Actually he's made about four or more, but there are two that truly stand out. Having said that, we'll tell you what those contributions were.

There is great unrest in the galactic senate. The great battle between the comic addicts and the book worms has left several worms squashed and other worms broken and shattered. Yet it seems that the worms still have a fight in them and they are gathering their forces for another battle. But with the great galactic Comic-Con coming up do these insects/low lives really stand a chance????

 PS I can’t even compare this one to Rocky vs Apollo Creed Part 2 simply because at least Creed had some odds favoring him!!
