Week In Review - 6th Feb 2012! Action Comics #6 + Fatale #2 + The Boys #63 + X-Club #3+Dark Horse Presents#8

Hey there all you Comic-addicts out there - young, old, thin, fat and anything and everything in between!
Come, grab a seat, settle back and relax as we bring you another edition of Week-In-Review as we review 4 of our teams picks from the past week.

ACTION COMICS #6
Writer:Grant Morrison
Artist:Andy Kubert
Reviewer: Anupam Sarkar
Take genius and flawless writing, awesome art and an iconic character and mix 'em up.
What you get is Action Comics #6!
Back in Issue 5, readers were introduced to the “Anti-Superman Army” who - for unknown reasons - travel back to the past to steal the power source of the rocket that sent Supes to Earth, a.k.a. Kryptonite, which they intend to use to put an end to Superman!
Issue 6 starts with a meet between the Anti-Superman Army and a scientist who extracted the Kryptonite from the rocket's engine.
He also explains that the Kryptonite can be used to create different colors of Kryptonite , which will have different effects on Superman.
The last issue introduced us to Superman from five years into the future from the Action Comics's time-period as well as the Legion of Super-Heroes' founding members (Cosmic Man, Lightning Man and Saturn Woman).
In this issue, we see the Legion trying to to get the Kryptonite back from the Anti-Superman Army and the scientist who are in a hollow lead pellet inside Superman's brain! (Now that sounds insane)
Readers also get a look at some of Superman's childhood memories which are unlocked when Saturn Woman accesses his memory in order to search for the hollow lead pellet.
The issue introduces some crazy yet awesome sci-fi stuff and all the genius stuff that Morrison is known for, while the art by Andy Kubert is just stunning.
SCORE: 10/10

FATALE #2
Writer: Ed Brubaker
Artist: Sean Philips
Reviewer: Akshay Dhar
It's hardly a secret that I'm a big fan of all the work that this pair has done, ESPECIALLY in the gritty, noir-ish genres of story-telling and when I reviewed Fatale #1 last month they showed they still have it and show no signs of letting up soon. This second issue comes in nice and gentle and then picks up steam in, letting up only at the end of the book and then only to leave you at the edge of your seat with a truly scary cliff-hanger moment. And I don't want to sound parrot-like but Sean Philips remains one of the consistently best artists around and his work complements the story beautifully!
Who is Josphine? What is her deal with Walt Booker? Does Hank have a larger role to play or is he just the wrong guy in the wrong place? WHAT and who in the name of all-the-is-holy is The Bishop?
Loads of character development and a faster narrative pace than #1, this issue keeps you involved and engaged as the worlds of old-school noir police and femme fatale story-telling crosses paths with something darker and more sinister and with touches of the supernatural.
SCORE: 8.5/10

THE BOYS #63
Writer: Garth Ennis
Artist: Darrick Robertson
Reviewer: Akshay Dhar
Well the $#!* has finally hit the fan and is now all over the place and then some! After all those many issues of sheer mystery, violence, intrigue, nudity, violence, profanity, twists, violence, conspiracy, mayhem... and did I mention violence?... the fantastically mad world of Garth Ennis' The Boys is reaching the culmination point!
This latest chapter (Over The Hill With The Swords Of A Thousand Men - Part 4) the Homelander is finally starting to show his hand, Hughie and the rest must now face what it is that stands before them as the world is set to go up in flames and fury and superheroes's and the rest of humanity stand at the brink of all out war. And of course smack in the midst of it all stands our dear friend Butcher, with many cards yet in hand and plans of his own as he leads his troops to the big game!
Everything you ever want from an issue of this series or simply from Ennis himself, this is yet another great read that really ramps up the pace as it heads to the series' finale on the horizon and still keeps the twists and turns and guilty pleasures alive and kicking.
SCORE: 9/10

X-CLUB #3 (of 5)
Writer: Simon Spurrier
Artist: Paul Davidson
Reviewer: Akshay Dhar
Filled with a nice sense of humour, good doses of action with liberal doses of high-flying concept science presented (in my view) simply enough that most folks would get it, this book ups the ante of the first two issues. I was surprised by #1, entertained by #2 and now was almost blown away by #3. The only thing that was a wee bit of a downer was semi-reveal of the new-yet-not evil behind all the recent goings-on what with the mutating sea-life, collapsing reality regions, super-computers, space elevators, time-space-flux and all. Well let's just say its been a fun outing for the crew and so many laughs at the expense of the snarky Dr. Nemesis who is actually getting some very amusing character development has been a total blast!
I was both excited and skeptical of this series when I saw the first issue on the stands and I have to say that it's one of those occasions where I'm overjoyed at being wrong. Nicely penned and equally nicely drawn by the creative team, they seem to have really found a great balance and style all their own with these characters.
It's a bigger deal than some of you might imagine because this is essentially an X-Men spin-off and follows primarily the group of genius/crazies that have been the X-Men's go-to science team for a little while now – Dr. Nemesis, Madison Jeffries, Dr. Kavita Rao (Indian!) and Danger – and has actually managed to find itself a fan-base and develop some good fresh feeling characters and all.
If you like good, funny action comics with some cleverness and lots of concepts and wierdness thrown around, then this is definitely the book for you!
SCORE: 7/10
