This week Marvel announced their next big summer event in the form of ‘Avengers vs. X-Men’ a 12-part crossover being written by the Marvel Architects (Bendis, Hickman, Brubaker, Aaron and Fraction) with Art duties being handled by John Romita jr., Oliver Coipel and Adam Kubert.

The story involves
the return of The Phoenix - as teased in Point
One - for her new host, who is
presumably Hope Summers, though I wouldn’t be surprised if it turns
out to be someone else entirely (like Emma Frost or the Scarlet
Witch). Hope Summers and Wanda Maximoff are known to be key players
in the series. In the event of the Phoenix’s coming, the X-Men want
to protect Hope, while the Avengers are looking to retrieve her
before The Phoenix arrives.
It is not clear which side Wolverine’s
team of X-Men are on, but it looks like the Avengers would be a good
side to bet on. The mini-series Avengers : X-Sanction will be leading
up to the crossover with Cable back from the future to stop the Avengers
before they hurt Hope Summers.

The other bit of
news that seems to have have gotten buried with all the Phoenix talk is that
2012 will mark the end of writer Brian
Michael Bendis’ tenure on Avengers
and New Avengers.
He is the master-mind and writer who is famous for having dismantled the team in Avengers
Disassembled before assembling them
again in New Avengers. Lasting
8 years, his run has been consistently good, and he has been credited with making Avengers the No. 1 franchise in comic books
today.
Here’s wishing Bendis the very best of luck in whatever
project he picks up next - whatever it is, we'll all be keeping an eye on the horizon for his next.

I have to admit, I like Bendis but I'm one of those "he needs to write less volume every month" types because I think he's spreading himself too thin - so this is a good thing and (hopefully) a good end to an epic run as the steering force of Marvel.
Not clear how happy I am about the Phoenix returning though.
