Writer: Chuck Dixon
Artist: Graham Nolan
Collects: Batman: Vengeance of Bane 1, Batman: Bane of The Demon 1-4, origin pages from 52 issue 46, Countdown to Final Crisis 4 and 7
This trade is actually a misnomer. The title says Batman Vs Bane, and Batman faces Bane just for a few panels, and nothing of substance actually happens in those panels. It's got a few good things (other than good creators and stories) running for it though. Vengeance of Bane is actually the first appearance of Bane, and has never before been collected (it should have been included in the first volume of Knightfall). Neither has Bane of The Demon. The other good thing is the price.

Vengeance of Bane introduces us to Bane. Born in prison to serve the prison sentences of his father, Bane grows up in the walls of Pena Duro and grows up the hard way. A number of sequences regarding how he conquers his fear are brilliantly told.
In prison, he comes into contact with Zombie, Trogg and Bird, later his henchmen. Bird tells Bane of Gotham City and his desire to take revenge upon his former employer. Bane catches a glimpse of Batman and decides to outwit him with strength and cunning and wrest Gotham City from his grasp.
Bane of The Demon details the first meeting of Ra's Al Ghul and Bane. Actually supposed to be a prelude to Legacy (Ra's Al Ghul and Bane vs the Bat Family), this series was printed later on as a prequel. The series opens with Bane looking for his father, whose identity is unknown to him.
In the course of his quest, he runs into Talia and she takes him to her father. Ra's is impressed with Bane's wit and agility, but does not favour his dalliance with Talia. Bane learns of Ra's immortality and calculates to make the secret his. The end of the book has a few text pages from 52 and Countdown covering the origins of Ra's Al Ghul, Bane and Batman.

Chuck Dixon wrote a long, underrated, more often not collected run on Detective Comics, as well as other Bat Family titles like Robin, Nightwing, Catwoman and Birds of Prey. His collaborator on Detective Comics was Graham Nolan, who provides wonderful art here. The work in this book is not the best of either of them, but for someone looking for a primer to Bane, you can't get more at this price.
Reports are that the first volume of the new edition of Knightfall will contain the current editions one and two plus Vengeance of Bane. If you have the current editions, skip buying the new edition of Knightfall Vol 1, buy this instead, you get an additional story. If you don't have the current editions, well, buy both. People have been waiting a long time to see this in trade, and it is definitely worth the wait.
My rating: 8 on 10
Contains full covers, printed on glossy paper, US$12.99
