Euro Comics: Freaks delight!

French comics inspired by the manga style have constantly impressed me in the past. Having a rich comic book tradition has created in the country a fertile ground for budding young artists who are emerging and presenting some very impressive work. I have already written about Dreamland another French comic in the manga style I really like. And here I am with another one for you.

This one, is the real deal.

Tada!

Freaks Squeele is Harry Potter given a shot of epinephrine.
Meaning it is a classic fantasy setting with all the classic fantasy tropes that come with it given copious amounts of adrenaline and a raging a boner. The main protagonist is equal parts badass and equal parts smart, making her, Yes she is a girl and a well drawn one at that, the perfect protagonist for a story so much on the beaten track yet completely derailed in its nature.

A fellowship between the most unique and diverse of characters is born out of necessity, is forged in the fires of adversity. Sound familiar? It should but that is besides the point. Point is, even if the setting is absolutely familiar. The execution is something you would have never seen before. The artwork is something you would have definitely never seen before. And the story is pretty damned good too.

The characters are rich and you will love every single one of them. Even the most minor of them. And the major ones well, they are the major ones. An academy for superpowered beings serves as the setting for this particular heroic tale. Where our heroine arrives as the only one who cannot use any special powers. Save her mind and her skill.

Oh and she can craft pimped out magical weapons.

So there is that. But she is more than capable of handling anything dished out. And she has friends watching her back. A Succubus favoured by destiny and a Loup Gaoru, possibly cursed by destiny. I'm temped to call him a werewolf but I have a feeling it is not as simple as that. All in all the elements come together rather well for this particular comic book. The author Florent Maudoux has done a fine job of weaving together a stellar tale. Worthy of being remembered long after it has been told.

So find it, read it and write to the author telling him what an awesome job he is doing. GO GO DAIGUNDER!!!
